WHY ARE SOME RENOVATION QUOTES CHEAPER THAN OTHERS ?
Who doesn’t like a good deal? Especially when it comes to home renovation, you could be saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars! But have you ever wondered why some renovation companies can offer prices that are significantly lower than their competitors?
IT'S A SCAM!!
As the saying goes, “If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
All renovation companies have pretty similar operating and material costs, so when a company boasts prices that are 30 to 50 per cent lower than everyone else, that’s something to be wary of.
These scammers would usually lure victims in and request a high deposit to “secure the deal” before running away with your savings and dreams of a beautiful home.
HIDDEN PRICES
Another common industry tactic is to hide necessary works in the quotation from unsuspecting homeowners.
Upon signing the contract or completion of works, you will then be presented with the real price which often goes beyond your intended budget. So instead of savings, you will be spending more than you should.
POOR QUALITY MATERIALS
Materials promised in the quotation might differ from the actual material used. The most common culprit is the type of wood used in carpentry as it is often wrapped in a laminate. The wrong choice of material can often lead to long-term problems such as warping or even collapsing.
ILLEGAL WORKERS
Aside from materials, the other most significant cost of a renovation for us is manpower. So what some contractors do is hire odd-job workers for a day without any permit to work on your home.
That may not seem like a problem for you but usually, such practice results in poor workmanship and after-sales service.
IMPORTED CARPENTRY
Due to the exchange rate with our neighbours up north, we often do our shopping to enjoy the discount, and so do renovation companies too.
Some companies order carpentry from Malaysia to save on cost but customers will find that they have a hard to getting amendments or exchanges as sending the carpentry to and fro again will result in a much higher cost.
So when you look for a renovation company, please be wary and do due diligence on the company such as:
1. Reading honest reviews from customers.
2. Cross-referencing the company name with CASE and ACRA.
3. Ensure the company has proper licensing (eg. HDB or BCA).
